food

We haven't gone too far afield to this point, but we have had some interesting experiences.

Thursday for lunch, we went to McDonald's between some of our office visits. As most parents can attest, this is not usually the first choice of cuisine when dining with our children, but since it was already after 1 PM, it was actually pretty satisfying. Not exactly like Mickey's at home, but close. And we spent about $11 for all 4 of us.

Wednesday evening we went to a Chinese restaurant near the hotel (the description sounded funny to us too - a Chinese restaurant near the hotel? Isn't that like saying the Baptist church in Dallas, or the lake in Minnesota? But that's what we're calling it). Since the menus were in both Chinese and English, and pictures were included for most items, we were able to function without our guide. We still ordered some "losers", and also ordered way too much food, but our total bill was still about 350 Yuan ($50+) for 12 of us - 6 adults and 6 kids, so we're definitely going back there! We stayed relatively safe - chicken, beef, shrimp, broccoli, rice - eschewing the chicken feet and exotic seafood.

A delivered pizza and a lunch in the hotel restaurant have been adequate and only to be repeated in the future for expediency, as doubtless they will be. Breakfast each morning has been very good at the hotel, with lots of options, and lots of things for Seth to point to to have. The only thing he's refused to this point are fruits, I think. A bit odd, especially given Shiyan's snack advice! He's definitely a carb man like his sister. So maybe we'll start with fruit by itself today.

  1. wow so many updates today! It is exciting to read your posts and I find myself wanting to check in often to see what new adventure has happened today!

Sounds like you are having quite the adventure. So does this mean he is officially YOUR son today?

You do have a very amazing little girl to go through all that she has in the past week and be such a great support for you and your new addition. What a great big sister she has become in such a short time!

  4. What an eventful past few days!!! Your descriptions of your adventures in Beijing bring back memories and have made me chuckle. I recall marveling at the crazy traffic and the crazier bicyclists everyday that I was there. (And also, what people carry on their bicycle while navigating traffic!) It sounds like a lot of the logistical stuff is completed now for the adoption, so I hope there will be less time standing in lines, and more time enjoying being in China with the family. Sounds like Josie is having a great time and I'm sure she is a wonderful Jie-Jie!

  5. The pics tell it all. All of you look sooooo happy. So glad to hear how positive this experience has been for Josie. And the picture of Seth with the stickers on his face crack me up. Can't wait until we will be able to communicate - he looks like a lot of fun!

Overwhelmed with happiness for all of you,
    Heather

  6. I love all the news of the last few days. I think we all eagerly look to the blog site daily if not more and have to smile with all of the info. Thanks for sharing with us.
Good to hear how well big sister is doing. Give her a "hi 5" for Gma D. It is terrific that she can get this view of Seth's "land of origin" and make these initial adjustments with you. Great photo of the 4 of you at the park.
    Much love,
    Mom / Grandma D
